Proceeding Summarily
In Canada, Summary Offences, also known as Summary Conviction Offences are “petty crimes” that are considered less serious than Indictable Offences because they are punishable by shorter prison sentences and smaller fines. These offences are usually tried in the Ontario Court of Justice. The maximum penalty for a summary conviction offence is a fine of not more than $5,000 or to a term of imprisonment of not more than two years less a day, or to both.
